One who constantly seeks a high pace to get things done will accomplish great feats. However, the price can be devastating.

Threats from Predators and Tasks

The gazelle walks on the savanna. Suddenly, a predator attacks from behind. The gazelle’s brain quickly decides to activate various functions. Oxygenation to the legs must increase so the body can run away quickly. The pulse must rise. Vision must sharpen. The immune system must activate to handle any wounds. At the same time, the brain decides to shut down several systems. The body does not need to grow or repair itself right now. Digestion can wait. Reproduction is not relevant in this situation. Sleep is not to be considered. The gazelle’s brain optimizes the body to survive.

You’re at work. Suddenly, an urgent task attacks from behind. Your brain quickly decides what needs to be activated. Oxygenation to the legs. Higher pulse. Sharper vision. Additionally, the brain shuts down a range of functions: growth, wound and injury repair, digestion, sexual desire, and sleep. All to optimize you.

Constant Optimization

This optimization is sometimes called “positive stress” and can be really useful when in a pinch. You simply become better, more focused, and stronger when it happens…
